Rockstar hasn't published official file size numbers. Based on community estimates, leaked store data, and the game's asset scale, most sources point to 150–200 GB. Plan accordingly — especially if you have an Xbox Series S.

1TB physical / ~802GB usable after system filesXbox Series S
512GB physical / ~364GB usable — very tight⚠ GTA 6 alone could take up 41%+ of Series S storage. Consider a storage expansion before November.
Why does GTA 6 need so much space?
Modern open-world games store the entire map's geometry, textures, audio, and scripts locally — streaming it on-demand from your SSD instead of loading screens. GTA 6's state of Leonida is reportedly larger and more detailed than anything Rockstar has built before.
RDR2 shipped at ~88GB in 2018. GTA V was ~100GB. Eight years of hardware advancement and a significantly larger map puts GTA 6 firmly in the 150–200GB range, in line with where other open-world flagships (Call of Duty, Cyberpunk 2077 with all updates) have landed.
Both physical disc and digital download require the same amount of SSD space — the disc doesn't replace the install, it's just a licence key.
Storage preparation checklist
Check your current free space
PS5: Settings → Storage. Xbox: Settings → General → Storage.
Clear or archive games you're not playing
Move old games to an external USB drive. You can reinstall later without repurchasing.
Consider an SSD expansion
PS5 supports M.2 NVMe SSD expansion. Xbox has proprietary Seagate expansion cards. Get this installed before launch day, not after.
Aim for 250+ GB free before launch
You'll want space for GTA 6 + the day-one patch + GTA Online content updates.
FAQ
Can I run GTA 6 from an external hard drive?▾
No. PS5 and Xbox Series X|S games must run from internal NVMe SSD or an approved SSD expansion. External USB drives can store game archives for backup, but you can't play from them directly.
What SSD expansion should I buy for my PS5?▾
Any M.2 NVMe SSD in the 2230 or 2280 form factor will work. Popular options: Samsung 990 Pro, WD Black SN850X, Seagate FireCuda 530. Aim for at least 1TB to future-proof yourself.
Does the Xbox Series S have an official storage expansion?▾
Yes — Seagate makes proprietary Xbox Expansion Cards. At 1TB, it's expensive but the only officially supported way to add full-speed storage to Series S.
